Budget
The backpacker center of Jakarta is Jl Jaksa, walking distance or a cheap bajaj ride) from Gambir station and Monas the national monument. There are many cheap hostels, or losmen, and a few mid-range hotels in this street and its side-streets, as well as many places to eat and drink. The cheapest rooms will usually be in very poor condition, often hot and with mosquitos - be sure to inspect before you agree to pay. Although there are souvenir hawkers and sex workers, it's generally a very low key place by the standards of Asian city tourist centers, and only moderately sleazy.
